Individual Therapy
Managing your life isn't the same as living it.
Many of my current individual therapy clients aren't necessarily struggling to function. Objectively, they appear to be doing “just fine.” Internally, their experience tells another story — and it only seems to be getting more difficult.
Individual Therapy might be right for you if:
- Things have been feeling a lot harder than they used to, and you aren’t sure why
- You value being a good partner and/or parent, but you often feel like you just don’t have enough left in the tank to show up in the ways you want to
- You are mostly juggling all of life’s responsibilities but are constantly in a state of worry about what you forgot or what you might forget
- You find yourself wondering if other people got an instruction manual for life or relationships that you weren’t given
- No matter how many things you achieve, you never seem to feel like you “made it”
- Everything takes longer than it should be, is more complicated than it should be, and the old ways of doing things just are not working
- You’re wondering if the choices you’ve made so far were the ones you’ve wanted or the ones that you were told you should want
- You often find yourself assuming you are just lazy, incompetent, robotic, impatient, indecisive, or short-tempered while simultaneously feeling like there is something larger getting in the way
- You prioritize making sure nobody knows you’re struggling as much as you are and are terrified of someone finding out you’re an imposter
What changes
- ✓You’ll learn more about how your brain works and how to make it work for you rather than against you
- ✓You’ll learn more about how the intersection of your past and present affect your future
- ✓We will collaborate on practical, tangible strategies to “drive the bus” when it comes to navigating your everyday thoughts and feelings
- ✓As you identify areas of growth and areas of strength, many clients find they are better able to work, be a partner, and be a parent without always feeling exhausted or overwhelmed
- ✓It’s possible to figure out why things have just never quite added up — and then do something about it
How Therapy Works
Individual therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Our first step will be a one or two session initial assessment where I learn more about your history and who you are today. You will fill out some paperwork, and I may recommend a few assessments or screeners that can be useful to both of us when it comes to better understanding your brain.
We'll talk about your family growing up, your childhood years, your transition into adulthood. We'll talk about your personal and professional identities. The stuff you love. The stuff you hate. The stuff you wish you had. The stuff you really struggle with internally and externally.
By the end of our initial assessment, we will ideally have a few goals that we agree to start with and we go from there. Sometimes individual therapy is more about getting through a specific moment in life. Sometimes people find themselves engaging in personal growth therapy in an open-ended way. Part of the work is an ongoing evaluation about whether you are getting what you want from our work. If you are, we continue. If not, we pivot.
