Assessment
You've often wondered if everyone's brain works the way yours does.
Let's finally find out.
I've added a formal assessment component that specializes in identifying high-functioning adults whose natural abilities allow them to mask underlying issues. These underlying issues typically reveal themselves later in life when life gets busier, more difficult, or more demanding.
Conducted entirely via telehealth · Available in Maryland, New York, and all PSYPACT states
Why might adults seek a comprehensive evaluation later in life?
The short answer: high intelligence and strong coping skills mask symptoms. Until they don't.
When tasks are manageable and external structure is provided (as it often is through high school) attention and executive function difficulties don't necessarily surface in obvious ways. You figure out how to successfully compensate whether you realize you are or not.
Life only gets more complex. Careers that once felt energizing become overwhelming. The scaffolding that worked at 25 doesn't hold at 40. Relationships strain under patterns that never quite had a name or a label.
For many adults, the trigger is external: a child's diagnosis, a job change, a burnout that doesn't resolve the way burnout usually does. For others, it's a subtle internal creep over time. A growing recognition that things require more effort than they should, and that the gap between performance and exhaustion keeps widening.
Who seeks evaluation
People who I most often see for formal psychological assessments have been managing for years — sometimes decades — using strategies they developed intuitively, without ever having a framework for why things worked the way they did. They've often had some inkling that their brains might not work exactly like everyone else's, but they have always been able to compensate well enough that it hasn't seemed like something they needed to truly explore. A strategy that works until it doesn't.
Common reasons people reach out:
- —You often feel like you are “performing life” rather than truly living it
- —You have never considered yourself to be an anxious person…until now
- —You are starting to wonder if maybe you aren’t just lazy and forgetful — what if something else is actually going on?
- —You have heard that ADHD/anxiety/neurodiversity are now being more often identified and diagnosed later in life
- —You’ve been described as bright but inconsistent
- —Therapy helped, but something still feels unexplained
- —You’re increasingly overwhelmed by things that didn’t used to seem so hard
- —Socializing has always been a challenging and uncomfortable topic and you prefer to not think too much about it
- —You’ve done the reading and want professional confirmation or clarity
- —A child’s diagnosis made you wonder about yourself
- —You need documentation for work, school, or insurance purposes
What evaluation can (and can't) do for you
An evaluation is a formal assessment that can clarify patterns, strengths, and challenges — and may lead to a formal diagnosis when appropriate. It can also provide guidance for therapy, coaching, or other supports.
In some cases, the outcome isn't a diagnosis but a deeper understanding of how your mind works. That's often valuable on its own.
A few things worth knowing:
- ✓A diagnosis is a tool, not a verdict. It opens options but it doesn’t close them.
- ✓Some diagnoses are challenging and require a combination of a clinical interview and history, formal neurocognitive batteries, and supplemental assessments to get a complete picture. This can take time.
- ✓Diagnoses centered around neurodivergence can be complex. There isn’t a “test” for autism but there are gold-standard instruments that can help us best understand your brain — and I include those in my assessment packages.
- ✓Proper clinical assessments typically require anywhere from 1 to 4 hours of assessment time — including self-assessments you fill out ahead of session combined with in-session psychometric instruments that I administer, score, and interpret.
- ✓Results are yours. A written report is provided and can be shared with whoever you choose.
- ✓Psychologists licensed in the state of Maryland (as I am) do not prescribe medication. If medication is part of your picture, I can coordinate with your prescriber.
The psychological assessment process
Evaluations are conducted entirely via telehealth and typically unfold across several sessions. The exact structure depends on the questions we're trying to answer.
Intake consultation
We talk through your history, what you’re trying to understand, and what the evaluation will involve. This is also where we determine whether an evaluation is the right fit.
Clinical interviews and rating scales
Structured interviews covering developmental history, current functioning, and relevant symptom domains. Self-report measures and, when appropriate, collateral forms.
Cognitive and neuropsychological testing
Standardized measures of attention, working memory, processing speed, and executive function — conducted via a secure, validated telehealth testing platform.
Feedback session and written report
We review findings together. You receive a written report with results, interpretation, and recommendations you can actually use.
Investment
Clinical assessment fees will vary depending on the scope and complexity of the evaluation. We will discuss any potential fees during the free 15-minute consultation so that you have a sense of the range of packages and costs before moving forward.
The initial intake will be 60 minutes and will be commensurate with my standard intake fees. Should we decide to move forward with a complete assessment battery at intake, you will know exactly how much the assessment will cost. You can also see if your insurance provider will reimburse for any portion of the assessment.
